Oaxacan Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a great canvas for experimentation. This one uses Mezcal giving it a little smokiness.

Stirred  |  Double Old Fashioned Glass  |  Big Ice Cube |  Orange Peel

Step 1:

Jigger into your mixing glass

  • 1.5oz Reposado Tequila (make sure it’s 100% Agave!)
  • 1oz Mezcal (A good place to start is Del Maguey Vida Mezcal which is pretty widely available and there are more Mezcal’s being imported everyday)
  • .25oz Agave Syrup
  • 1 dropper full of Miracle Mile Chocolate Chili Bitters

Step 2:

Fill your mixing glass with ice and stir smoothly for 25-30 seconds

Step 3:

Use a hawthorne strainer to pour your smoke-a-licious concoction into a double old fashioned glass over a big ice cube.

Step 4:

Cut a wedge of lime. Use a Y-peeler to cut a strip of orange peel. Squeeze the lime into your drink and tuck it in next to the ice. Take your orange peel, hold it between your fingers by the edges, shiny side out and squeeze the orange oil over the top of your cocktail.

Step 5:

Rest the peel on top of your drink. Take a sip, close your eyes, and imagine a Mexican sunset over a lush valley as you drift away to Oaxaca.
